Book Week Celebrations
What a way to celebrate Book Week! There has been heaps of activities in the Library and around the school grounds culminating in a dress up day with simply sensational costumes and lots of special guests like Cruella DeVille and some of the 101 Dalmations, Jack Sparrow from The Pirates of the Carribean, Queen Amidala from Star Wars, Belle from Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, Pippy Longstocking, Where's Wally, Dorothy from the Wizard of OZ, Mr Potato Head, Thing 1and Thing 2 Arlo from Arlo Needs Glasses, Billie B. and lots of crayons from The Day the Crayons Quit and that was just the staff. The students were also dressed to impress with lots of Harry Potter characters, Superheroes, Princesses, Where's Wally, Transformers, cowboys, and Cats in Hats. It was an exciting week to be at school!
The library was very busy. During the week over 70 new books were put on display for the students to reserve ready to borrow next week.
All classes including the Jumpstart at Pimpala playgroup prepared art work based on a shortlisted Book Week book they had read, for our Art Gallery. Art work has been on display before and after school for parents/caregivers to view all last week. There are some really clever artists in our community, who under great direction from their teachers, have created some outstanding pieces of art, which the students will get to bring home. Great work everyone!
Karen also arranged lunch time activities in the Library most days of the week including making rocking birds, fish spinners, dragon masks and peg puppets.
On Wednesday at lunch time Karen planned a Treasure Hunt based on the Book Week theme of Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds. Over 180 students participated in this activity which involved walking around the school looking for evidence Old Worlds - pictures of dinosaurs, New Worlds - pictures of robots, Other Worlds - pictures of aliens. Students then had to tally up how many of each type they could find. Every participant won a prize. The student who guessed the right number of dinosaurs, robots and aliens - 11:11:11 was Sophie P. Congratulations Sophie on winning a $20 Scholastic Voucher. Evelyn M and Ruby L only got one number wrong and were given a pick from the Library prize box each.
Can you judge a winning book by it's cover competition was run during the week. Students were asked to guess which book would win in each of the 5 Book Categories based on their covers. The 2 winners, Scott S and William F got 3 of the 5 categories right and won a $20 Scholastic Book Voucher each. Interestingly 55% of entries got zero right, so it just goes to show your really can't judge a book by it's cover.
Another competiton which ran during the week was What Book is That? a puzzle game where students put the clues together to identify the title of a book in the library. There were 120 entries received and 11 students got them all right. Names were put in a hat and 2 people won $20 Scholastic Book Vouchers - Ace C and Isabella E. The other 9 students who got them all correct were Kye C, Lila S, Tahlia P, Jasmine P, Alyssah M, Bella T-C, Jessie D, Sophie P, Isaac E who got to pick a prize out of the prize box in the Library.
Pick the staff's favourite book competition will run until next assembly. Both students and staff can enter this competition.
Special thanks to Karen in the Libary - also known as Queen Amidala (from Star Wars fame) who has gone above and beyond to make Book Week such a huge success. Karen not only put the Art Gallery display together which took hours of her own time, but came up with and ran all the Book Week activities. All credit to you Karen - she is an amazing SSO!
