Book Week

2020_bookweek_banner_400.jpg

Book Week 2020 was moved by the Children's Book Council Australia to Term 4 this year and we will be celebrating it in Week 2. Given this change of date and restrictions brought about by COVID-19, Book Week will look very different from other years.

This years theme is 'Curious Creatures, Wild Minds' and drawing from this theme, our library has become a jungle and is now home to many curious creatures that have come from the wild minds of our students.

During Book Week, there will be special lunchtime activies in the Library all week.

On Friday, 23 October, instead of a Book Week parade, we are having a dress up day. Students (and staff) can dress as their favourite book character or come as their own curious creature from the shortlisted books, in line with this year’s theme.

The day has been planned to enable students with opportunities to become inmmersed in a range of texts from the shortlisted Book Week selection and there have been a range of activities conducted this term in preparation for the day. Teachers have accessed and read all of the Book Week books from the 'Picture Book", 'Early Childhood' and New Illustrator" categories during weeks 8, 9 and 10 this term. A competition is currently under way and students have been voting for which book they think will win in all 5 categories. A winner will be drawn from the votes for the winning book in each category, and the winning student will receive a $20 Scholastic Book Club voucher to be spent in Term 4.  The winners will be drawn at the assembly this Friday 23rd October.

Classes will be creating art to represent their class book and it will be displayed in a Book Week Art Gallery in the Hall during Book Week. Classes will be able to visit and view each other’s work.

We are working on a system to allow parents and caregivers access to view this display and will advise of the details early next term. As we are making plans for this day now, we do not know what restrictions or limitations may be in place on adult attendees at school and will make decisions in line with guidance from the Department for Education.  We are hoping that a few weeks will bring some more clarity and easing of restrictions. This is still a difficult time for everyone and we appreciate support from our community in making amendments to whole school events so they can still be conducted.
